Plantation Shutter Consumer Alert

Over the past 60 years plantation shutters have grown in popularity, and with popularity different types of component parts are used to build shutters. The large louver plantation shutters concept started in California where wood shutters are the most common and built with incense cedar and basswood. In the 80’s a product was introduced into the market made of solid PVC known as poly. Shortly after bringing more competition and lower prices into the industry, products like fiberboard and hollow PVC were introduced.

The hollow PVC was thought to drive down prices and make plantation shutters more affordable, however in South Florida, and many other tropical areas, there are potential problems to contend with. In one word, MOSITURE. If you have ever experienced condensation on your windows when heat is being transferred into a room of cool air or vice versa, you will understand the potential problem. A PVC shutter, which is hollow, can create moisture inside the shutter’s components, whenever you have a dark, moist, space in an area of heat you now have the opportunity to grow, mold. It does not matter if you fill this hollow space with wood or anything else if moisture can get in then mold can grow.

The other product that has grown in popularity is fiberboard. If you have ever had a Formica kitchen and experienced it falling apart at the seams, you know first hand it was probably built out of fiberboard. While moisture can be a problem in South Florida fiberboard can be your worst enemy.
