How to Measure your Window for Plantation Shutters

Weather you decide on poly or wood plantation shutters; your openings are measured the same. When measuring for plantation shutters, there are some simple steps you need to follow to be certain the shutters you order are the correct size for the window. Before starting to measure for plantation shutters, it is important to use a reliable ruler. A steel tape measure is recommended. After selecting a tape measure, the next step is to determine whether the window is square using a level. Place the level diagonally from the top corner of the window frame to the opposite bottom corner; this should be done from both top corners (Figure 1). The difference between both diagonal measurements should be less than ¼-inch difference. If the difference measures between ¼ inch and ½ inch, the window is out of square. It is important to remember most all windows are out of square. To make up for the ability to mount a shutter inside an opening an industry standard of ¼” is deducted from the width and the height to allow for a Shutter frame to fit in the opening. Once the window is squared, use a tape measure to find the depth of the window (Figure 2). It is important to make note of any locks, cranks, or other objects that may block the louvers from opening all the way.

When measuring for inside mount shutters, measure from inside the frame of the window where the shutters will be mounted. Start by measuring horizontally at the top, center, and bottom of the window. Then, measure vertically at the left, center, and right of the window and provide the smallest measurement. IRSC excepts measurements to the 1/16th of an inch. (See figure 3).

If measuring for outside mount shutters, measure from where the shutters will be mounted outside the window frame or trim. Take Measurements horizontally from the top, center, and bottom of the window. Next, measure vertically at the left, center, and right of the window. With IRSC This type of measure is known as ODF, Outside Dimension of Frame and must be specified as ODF. (See figure 4)

These dimensions will determine what size plantation shutter needs to be ordered. You also always have the option of calling for a Shutter Tech From IRSC and getting them to do the measuring for you. (Figure 4) When it comes to specially shaped windows, call Indian River Shutter Company and we will send someone out to measure the opening and make the process easier for you.  If you would like to join in the discussion, post a comment below for our shutter experts to assist you in your measurements and help you order your window.
